SUMMARY:When Volunteers are More Valuable than Money
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at North Park University\, Chicago\, IL \nAbout this Session:  For many nonprofits\, the offer from a volunteer to help on a website\, look at a budget\, or provide database support is a double-edged sword. Help is nice\, but the wrong help on these critical infrastructure challenges is doubly costly as a nonprofit must find a way to first “use” the volunteer and still make sure the work gets done. Join Elizabeth Schwan-Rosenwald to learn about best practices in using skilled-based volunteers in ways that work for your organization and the volunteer. Hear what success can look like based on 15 years of learnings from the Taproot Foundation and think about how to make sure volunteers are working for you! \nFor more information and registration\, visit: Axelson Center for NFP Management

SUMMARY:Ensure Organizational Leadership: Succession Planning for All
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at North Park University\, Chicago\, IL \nAbout this Session: \nThe most valuable asset of a nonprofit organization is its executive director/chief executive officer; a critical function of the governing board of an organization is the hiring and monitoring of its ED/CEO.  The board is obligated to ensure leadership continuity\, and the ED/CEO should likewise attend to succession readiness at the executive level. This workshop session will focus on the board’s involvement with succession planning; and the ED/CEO’s role in overall succession planning of the senior leadership team. This entails an intentional value for transparency\, a commitment of time and planning\, and a focus on strengthening skills and leadership capacities. We will review effective policies and procedures that need to be in place and building a “bench” (or “cross-training”) as an effective tool for succession planning. Consideration will be made of the impact of the size of the organization\, and the skills and capacity of its existing leadership. The workshop format will be based on creative discussion (including case examples from participants) and developing the components of an individual plan for succession. \nFor more information and registration\, visit: Axelson Center for NFP Management
